What is a Parent Participation Preschool?

In a Parent Participation Preschool (PPP), the children, their parents, and the teacher all participate in a creative learning environment. A PPP is a non-profit organization funded and maintained by parents who wish to provide high quality educational experiences for their preschool children. The Village PPP is owned and operated by the parents of the children currently enrolled in the program. Parents form the administrative backbone of the school, employing a teacher and acting as volunteer classroom assistants.

Strengths of Parent Participation Preschools

  • Positive Sense of Community for Parents
As families with preschool age children in a broader community, PPP parents form a sub-community where families can rely on each other for support, information-sharing, and good times.
  • Positive Sense of Community for Children
Children who attend PPPs benefit from the sense of community that results from families being involved in the PPP organization. PPP parents report that they, and sometimes their children, experience less separation anxiety at the beginning of the school year because the preschool is a familiar place with some familiar faces.
  • Opportunities for Parent Education
Parents agree upon registering their children in the preschool to attend parent education meetings held monthly throughout the school year. Parent education activities serve two purposes: parents learn specific skills to increase their effectiveness as assistants in the preschool classroom on their duty days and they provide information of general interest to parents of young children.

The Village PPP is a member of the British Columbia Council of Parent Participation Preschools (CPPP), which represents over 2,000 families at 50 member preschools in British Columbia. The purpose of the CPPP is to unite and assist member preschools in providing a high standard of preschool education by the supported effort of parents and teachers in a planned adult education program. The CPPP is a registered non-profit society and a registered charity.

Early Learning Foundations

Early Learning Foundations (ELF) Programs have a unique affiliation with the North Vancouver School District. All ELF preschools adhere to the program Guiding Principles and Practices developed by Early Childhood Educators and the North Vancouver School District and provide a high quality developmentally appropriate preschool program in a play-based environment. ELF programs have been developed for 3&4 year old children.

The programs are conveniently located in a number of North Vancouver neighbourhoods and include a variety of program choices including Montessori and Parent Participation preschools. Whatever the program philosophy, parents can be assured that each of these ELF sites are administered by a qualified Early Childhood Educator.

For more information about the program, please visit the North Vancouver School District website.

Tribes Learning Communities

"Creating Tribes Learning Communities In Child Care and Preschool Settings" is a program for ELF Early Childhood Educators sponsored by the North Vancouver School District. The Tribes program helps increase inclusion, caring, collaborative skills and critical thinking in the preschool setting.

Educators learn how to:

  • Teach children specific collaborative skills so that they can play and work well together
  • Teach children community agreements designed to foster inclusion and cooperation
  • Transfer responsibility to children to help each other maintain the positive Tribes agreements and caring environment
  • Use the process for problem-solving, conflict resolution, prevention, and child development
  • Facilitate cooperative strategies for social, emotional and cognitive development
  • Encourage an understanding and appreciation for diversity of ideas, culture and values.
